In this parshah, the Jews are told by Hashem that they should watch themselves very well. This means that we are obligated to protect ourselves from harm. One of the safety precautions that we take every day is the use of seat belts when riding in a car. This lesson will demonstrate Newton’s law of inertia which is that an object in motion will remain in motion unless acted on by an outside force. Our bodies in a forward moving vehicle will continue to move forward even after the car has stopped. That’s why seat belts are so important! They act as the outside force to stop the forward motion of our bodies.
The students will cause a penny on a toy car to continue to move forward after the car has stopped. They will identify this phenomenon as inertia. They will conclude that securing the penny prevents the force of inertia from affecting it and that is why we need seat belts to stay safe in a car
