Avram served his guests a freshly prepared, delicious meal that included butter. To experience how making butter might have happened during Avram’s days, make butter with your students the old fashioned way, by churning jars of cream until it solidifies into a spreadable consistency.
By shaking a container of liquid cream, your students will transform the cream into butter that has a spreadable consistency. They will be able to explain that the vigorous shaking caused the fat bubbles in the cream to bust. They will emulate the hospitality of Avram Avinu by sharing and serving the butter to guests.
Skills Needed:
focus on task, ability to follow instructions, gross motor skills (vigorous shaking, passing an object to from one to another)
Small jars with screw-on lids Heavy whipping cream at room temperature (removed from refrigeration at least four hours prior to this activity) Food coloring and flavoring (optional) Music CD (optional)
